As someone who is a strictly routine-based person, art has allowed me to express myself
and my passions without following a guideline, which is usually what I tend to depend
on on all other aspects of my life. This sense of whimsicality is what draws others
and myself to appreciate art, and drives artists to create pieces that stem from within.
Anything can be considered art, if genuinity, individuality, and creativity are incorporated.
Design, however, is within the context of human interaction because of its role in
shaping behavior and thoughts. Much of design is catered towards a specific audience,
with checkpoints in mind. In our ever-fluctuating society, design is an integral part
in ensuring the progression of all fields in both societal and practical functions.
In other words, rather than having an inspirational purpose, design motivates and
communicates with an audience. There are rules, shortcuts, and guidance to design
that can ensure optimal and wanted reactions from viewers, like color psychology or
basic composition, whereas art lacks rule and order. These attributes are not pros
and cons, but simply differences. “Free” versus “fix” may seem to have good and bad
connotations, respectively, but as Kanye West also stated, the world can not progress
or survive without design.
